Here is information about the GSCM 585 “Research in GSCM” fieldtrip
Dates of trip: February 24-25, 2023 (Friday-Saturday)
Location: Mesa, Arizona (Arizona State University campus)
Conference: Journal of Operations Management Mini-Conference
Logistics
Flights
We will probably fly out of Provo on an 8am flight on the 24th. (students will have to get themselves to the airport by a reasonable time, which is probably 7am for that small of an airport) The conference in Mesa starts at noon that day and continues through 4pm on the 25th. We will probably catch the 6:48pm flight, arriving back in Provo at 8:23pm. Students will need to then get themselves home from the airport.
Lodging
We will probably stay in a conference hotel: either the Hyatt Place or Hyatt House. We will of course comply with standard BYU travel policies including: same gender sharing rooms, everyone gets their own bed, faculty (me) get my own room, etc. This means that if only one of the two women registered for the class winds up attending she will get her own room.
Food
The conference registration fee includes lunch and dinner on Friday, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. We will have dinner at the airport on Saturday before flying home.
Topics of conference
A student asked:
You know if we’ll have enough experience reading papers in supply chain research that we’ll have a clue of what’s going on? Not sure I want to go to a conference where people pull out mathematical methods I’ve never learned during presentations and watch them for two whole days… Are end results of supply chain research clear enough for the layman to understand?
Short answer: yes.
Long answer:
This is not a typical academic conference that has obscure research papers. It is a conference presented by a journal that is wanting to solicit new research on hot topics. As such, I the sessions are likely to be about what is interesting to look at in those topics, probably highlighting what progress has already been made.
Here is a list of sessions…
- Session 1: Next steps for the Public Policy and Industry Studies Department, and an update on how OSCM is happening in Washington
- Session 2: Pre-approved research designs, Report from the guest editors of JOM’s special issue, Implications more generally for JOM
- Session 3: JOM Awards
- Session 4: Finland’s implementation of biochar technology
- Session 5: Panel discussion of the Finnish biochar initiative (researchers from Finland participating by Zoom)
- Session 6a: Empirically Grounded Analytics (EGA): Designing data collection around analytical insights
- Session 6b: Sustainability research at JOM
- Session 7a: Special issue research incubator: Sustainable Agriculture and Supply Chains
- Session 7b: Special issue research incubator: Operational Perspectives on Blockchain Applications
- Session 8a: Special issue research incubator: Innovations, Technologies, and the Economics of Last-Mile Operations
- Session 8b: Special issue research incubator: The Operations and Supply Chains of Pharmaceutical Products
- Session 9: Debrief and closing remarks
In other words, it is about what is interesting to look at in GSCM research – which is perfect for our class.
