On Oct. 18 I had the amazing opportunity to network with the advisory board of the GSCM program. As an introvert I was nervous right before it started. However, once the board members walked in and I got to talk Clark Ponthier, Chris Thackeray, Mike Stokes, Rob Lechtenberg, and Scott Moscrip, I was overwhelmed by how much I felt like they wanted me to succeed. Almost all of them asked questions about me and why I wanted to be in the Global Supply Chain Management program. They really cared about talking to and connecting with the students.
Although they had specific topics to talk about, most gave wonderful advice about life and work. Of all the lessons I learned two really stuck out to me. First, “Follow leaders, not money.” -Rob Lechtenberg. This was extremely impactful. Rob told us to find people who put effort and energy into us and follow them. These mentors will be invaluable. Money will come on its own, but we need to surround ourselves with people that want us and help us succeed.
Second, “If you’re at work be at work. If you’re at home, be at home. If you’re doing your church calling, do your church calling.” -Scott Moscrip. He went on to explain that we as college students aren’t always happy. We aren’t happy because we are out of balance. We need to focus on what we are doing and when we are doing it. If we focus on school too much, we become unhappy. If we focus on our social status to much, we are unhappy. We can find happiness when we are doing the right things at the right time and for the right amount of time.
