This weekend, the GSCM Department and GSCA Leadership combined forces to bring about the much-anticipated First Annual Junior Core Retreat of 2017! The Juniors had the opportunity to work with their classmates outside of the classroom on fun team-building projects at BYU Timp Lodge in Provo Canyon. Thanks to Sue Armstrong, our main sponsor and Chief Operations Officer at Nature’s Sunshine, we had a successful weekend of fun, learning, and bonding between classmates and professors.
Sue took the time to speak to us on the importance of the Supply Chain profession in our globalized world today. The field of supply chain is always changing and will always need continuous improvement. Sue also graciously brought gifts on behalf of Nature’s Sunshine to the Juniors.
Nature’s Sunshine’s sponsorship fully covered lodging, food, and shirts for the GSCM First-Year students. We are grateful for Sue and Nature’s Sunshine for their generosity and investment in the BYU GSCM students.
After dinner, the Juniors worked together on their teams for a flag decorating activity to unite forces. Each team creatively came up with decorated flags corresponding with their team number and the field of Global Supply Chain.
Teams were then entered into a Family Feud tournament to test the students’ knowledge on the GSCM profession and even the BYU GSCM professors: Drs. John Gardner, Tom Foster, Simon Greathead, Scott Sampson, Scott Webb, and Cindy Wallin. Section 2, Team 8 were the ultimate winners and won the coveted fudge from the BYU Bookstore.
The next morning, we enjoyed breakfast with a panel discussion including our GSCM professors joined by Scott and Carmen Moscrip, founders of the Internet Truckstop Group based in Idaho. The Moscrips have been on the Advisory Board since 2012 generously contributing to the BYU GSCM program. They all answered the Juniors’ questions regarding the future of Supply Chainand how to present oneself when recruiting.
Afterwards, the Juniors participated in a reverse Shark Tank activity where they were given an odd object and needed to pitch this product to the “sharks” (Dr. Greathead, Dr. Wallin, and the Moscrips). The Juniors were very creative in pitching their products, especially Section 2 Team 8 (again) when they pitched their all-in-one model airplane.
Ultimately, our Retreat was a success! Many students agreed they had a great time really getting to know each other on a personal level to kick off the year in the Junior Core.
If you are a part of the Global Supply Chain Management program at BYU, you will also get to participate in events like this when we continue our Annual Junior Core Retreats in years to come.
