Tech Nights 2019

This week seniors in the GSCM program held two tech nights for the juniors in the program. With a big class project being released this week that features an excel spreadsheet with over 40,000 rows of data these tech nights are vital to being able to work through that data. The tech nights covered basic Excel functions and Tableau.

During the first of the tech nights we were able to cover Excel functions. The seniors had a list of 8 basic functions that they wanted to cover in an hour. Functions like cleaning data, filtering, vlookup, pivot tables, etc. While we were able to cover many of the functions we weren’t able to cover them all in the hour that was scheduled for the tech night. Although this wasn’t ideal, the seniors had put a basic explanation of how to use each of the functions in the spreadsheet. So you don’t need someone there to learn the material, although it is easier if someone is there walking you through it.

The second night was focused on using Tableau. What an amazing program. For those that don’t know what Tableau does, it allows you to visualize data. The seniors instructed us on how to prep the data outside and inside of Tableau. A big problem of this tech night is that students kept coming in late and the seniors would halt the tech night to help that student catch up. Needless to say, we didn’t get through all of the material we wanted to in the hour that we had.

In summary, the tech nights were extremely beneficial. Juniors are now going to be able to exceed on the big class project as well as future internships and careers. Thank you to the seniors who put this together and sacrificed their time to help the Juniors.
